  • take place in private residences
  • involve victims under the age of 18

The vast majority of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.


Who are the victims of sexual assault?

In 2008, there were 5,341 sexual assaults recorded by the police in Québec. Who were these victims?

The majority of victims are women and children

  • Underage girls: 53%
  • Adult females: 30%
  • Underage boys: 15%

Just over 8 out of 10 of victims knew the perpetrator

  • for example, an acquaintance or immediate family member.

7 out of 10 victims were assaulted in a private residence

  • 39%: in a residence where both the victim and the perpetrator lived
  • 22%: in the victim’s residence
  • 26%: in the perpetrator’s residence

Nearly 29% of victims were physically injured


Regardless of the circumstances surrounding a sexual assault, the victim is never to blame!

The truth is that it can happen to anyone: a child, adolescent or adult regardless of their age.

And the victim is never to blame…

  • Regardless of how he or she was dressed
  • Regardless of his or her state of mind or behaviour
